Prep pan
Ingredients
-
1 box yellow cake mix, prepared per box instructions
-
1 box chocolate cake mix, prepared per box instructions
For Strawberry Batter
-
3 tablespoons strawberry Jello
-
Red food coloring, couple of drops
For Vanilla Batter
-
1 tablespoon vanilla
-
2 Tablespoons of vanilla pudding
For Toasted Marshmallow Frosting
- 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1-2 Tbsp milk
- 20 mini marshmallows
Instructions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350° and prep a bundt pan with bundt gunk. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cake mix, milk, oil, and eggs. Divide batter evenly into three bowls.
Step 2
In two separate bowls, make the chocolate and yellow cake mixes.
Step 3
Divide the yellow cake mix into two bowls. In one bowl, add the strawberry ingredients and in the other add the vanilla ingredients. Mix each to combine. You will now have three bowls of different flavors of cake batter.
Step 4
Start layering the batter into the prepared bundt pan. Time to get creative. You can pour each layer on top of each other, you can scoop a bit of each in, there is no wrong answer. You will have more chocolate batter than strawberry and vanilla. You don’t have to use all the batter, but its nice to have extra just in case you have a larger bundt pan.
Step 5
Bake until set, about 40-45 minutes. Let cool in pan for 15 minutes before inverting onto wire rack to cool completely.
Step 6
Once cooled, make frosting. Beat the butter until smooth. Add in powdered sugar slowly and then 1 tbsp of milk and continue mixing until smooth.
Step 7
Set your oven to broil. Either using parchment paper on a sheet pan, or like me, putting marshmallows in a silicone baking dish, place under broiler for about 45 seconds until they are browned and puffed. Keep your eye on your marshmallows because they burn easily. Keep in mind that if they aren’t melty enough, they aren’t going to combine nicely into your buttercream. You’ll have marshmallow lumps which is not as pleasant as it sounds.
Step 8
As soon as your toasted marshmallows are out of the oven, scrape them into your buttercream and mix until smooth. The buttercream will be warm, so let it cool completely before you try to frost your cake with it. If you’d like it a little thinner, you can add a bit more milk. I decorated my cake by piping large circles of frosting on top of the cake and letting it droop down the sides.
