savory bundt cake - philly cheesesteak

It’s the movie that made Eye of the Tiger famous, but in this case, you’ll be singing Ribeye of the Tiger, because this is one tasty bundt. If you’re like me, when you think about Philadelphia, no movie comes to mind faster than Rocky. Ok, maybe the movie Philadelphia…and fine, maybe Philadelphia Story. But as good as those movies may be, Rocky and Philadelphia Cheesesteaks just go better together. This is a great bundtwich to serve at a Rocky movie night because of how fun it is to share. No offence to the hoagie, it’s a great bread, but it doesn’t pack the same punch (see what I did there?) of a shareable bundtwich.

Prep pan

Ingredients

  • 2 x 13.8 oz cans of refrigerated pizza crust (I used Pillsbury Classic Crust)
  • 2 tablespoons of oil, divided.
  • 1 pound ribeye steak cut as thinly as possible (it helps if its partially frozen)
  • ½ onion, sliced
  • 2 cups of sliced mushrooms
  • 1 green pepper, sliced into thin strips
  • Your favorite seasonings (I used garlic powder and seasoning salt)
  • 1 cup of Cheeze Whiz, warmed

Cake Instructions

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350° Spray your bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray.

Step 2

Open each can of bread dough keeping each “log” intact. Press into your bundt pan, forming an unbroken ring. Do your best to connect both logs as closely as possible so there isn’t much of a seam. You’ll want your bread to have the same amount of integrity as Mickey, Rocky’s trainer. Both logs should come together as one, unbroken whole. Press down the logs so they are flattened a bit. You’ll want the bottom of the bundt to sit level.

Step 3

Bake until golden brown. This should take about 35 minutes. Let it cool for ten minutes before flipping out of the pan. Let it cool completely.

Step 4

While your bread is cooling, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the mushrooms, green pepper, and onion cooking (and stirring!) until soft. This should take about 7 minutes. Remove the vegetables from the pan and set aside.

Step 5

Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan and add the rib eye. Try to get all of the slices of ribeye flat in the pan. Let cook undisturbed until no longer pink. You may have to cook the ribeye in batches depending on how big your pan is.

Step 6

Add the vegetables back to the pan and stir in with meat. Add your seasonings. Cook for about a minute to reheat the vegetables.

Step 7

With a serrated knife, slice your bread in half horizontally so that you have a top half and a bottom half. Set your decorative top aside (this is the half that baked at the bottom of your pan and looks a bit nicer). With clean hands, burrow a ditch in the base of your bundt. This is so the filling has a proper resting place and won’t ooze out when you slice the bundt into pieces. The nature of the pizza crust is that a middle ditch will come out really easily (as in one long ditch piece). And this ditch pieces makes for a well-earned snack.

Step 8

Put the base (the bottom) of your bundt on to a serving plate or cake stand. Spoon your meat/veggie mixture evenly on bundt base. It doesn’t just have to go in your bread ditch, you can cover your bundt base with filling. Pour your warmed Cheeze Whiz over the filling.

Step 9

Being as careful as possible, and ideally with a little help, carefully place decorative and press down.’

Step 10

Cut into slices and serve while yelling “ADDDDDDRIAN”. It’s so important to stay on theme.
